Tenista estadounidense. Ganó su primer título de
singles en un Grand Slam cuando aún era aficionado (el Abierto de EE.UU. de 1968). Fue el primer miembro afroamericano del equipo estadounidense de Copa
Davis y contribuyó a ganar cinco campeonatos de dicho torneo (
1963, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1978). En 1975 obtuvo el título de
singles en
Wimbledon y encabezó el campeonato mundial de tenis. Se retiró en 1980 y fue capitán del equipo estadounidense de Copa Davis hasta 1985. Fuera de la cancha fue crítico de las injusticias raciales, incluida la política de
apartheid sudafricana. En 1992 reveló que había sido infectado con el VIH por una transfusión de sangre postoperatoria, y desde ese momento se dedicó a aumentar la conciencia pública respecto del sida.
